When it comes to marketing, at 3dconsult we subscribe to the definition used by The Chartered Institute of Marketing in the UK. They define marketing as follows:

"Marketing is the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably.”

The definition provides a lot of clarity, establishing marketing as a process, instead of a (promotional) project, focusing clearly on fulfilling customer requirements, rather than on the combination of resources available to the organization that need to be generate revenues.

The trick is then to constantly evaluate and align the organizations resources so that they can be utilized to meet (or where possible exceed) customer requirements. As marketing great Seth Godin states in his book “Small is the new Big:

“If your target audience isn’t listening. It’s not their fault, it’s yours.
If one story is not working, change what you do, not how loudly you yell”.

Yes, promotion is a key element of any marketing campaign. But in the end you’re communicating about how well you understand the client’s requirements and how you propose to fulfill her needs.
